How Many Business Days Are in a Month, Actually?

The 21.75 figure comes from a simple yearly calculation: 52 weeks × 5 weekdays ÷ 12 months. It's a fine planning average across a full year, but no actual month has 21.75 weekdays — every month has a whole number, and which whole number depends entirely on which day of the week that month happens to start and end on. The actual weekday count, month by month

Counting Monday through Friday for every month of 2026 gives a range from 20 to 23 weekdays — never 21.75, and never the same number twice in a row for long:

Add those up and 2026 has 261 weekdays total — divide that by 12 and you get back to the familiar 21.75 average. But notice February (20 weekdays) and July or December (23 weekdays each) sit three full days apart. If a contract pays out "net 15 business days" starting in early February versus early December, the actual calendar spread between those two 15-business-day windows will differ by several calendar days, purely because of which weekdays the months land on.

Why the shortcut fails: it's about the calendar, not the average

A month's weekday count depends on two things: how many days it has (28 to 31) and which day of the week it starts on. A 31-day month that starts on a Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday picks up an extra weekday compared to one that starts on a Saturday or Sunday, because it fits in more full Monday-to-Friday stretches. February is short enough that it can only ever land on 20 or 21 weekdays, never higher — there simply aren't enough days in the month to reach 22. None of that variation shows up if you just divide the yearly total by 12; the average is real, but it describes the year, not any month you're actually trying to plan around.

Then holidays cut it down further

Weekday count and business-day count aren't automatically the same thing — "business day" commonly excludes public holidays too, but which holidays depends on your country, company, and contract, so there's no universal rule to bake in. As one concrete reference point: 2026 has 11 US federal holidays, and every one of them falls on a weekday that year (none happen to land on a weekend, which would otherwise not reduce the weekday count). Subtracting those 11 from the 261 weekdays above leaves 250 actual working days across the year for a business that observes the full federal holiday calendar — about 21 days over the plain weekday count.

Worked example

Say a vendor invoice is due "20 business days" after it's issued on Monday, November 2, 2026. November has 21 weekdays, so there's just enough room to land the 20th business day inside November itself — count forward and it falls on Monday, November 30, 2026 (Thanksgiving, a Thursday, sits inside that stretch on November 26 — if your business observes it as a holiday, subtract that day and the due date rolls to Tuesday, December 1 instead). This is the kind of one-day slip that a flat "about a month" or "21.75 days" estimate would miss entirely, but that a real day-by-day count catches.
