How this is calculated

The calendar year splits into four fixed three-month quarters: Q1 (Jan–Mar), Q2 (Apr–Jun), Q3 (Jul–Sep), and Q4 (Oct–Dec). Your date's month decides which one it falls in, then the calculator counts calendar days from that quarter's first day to find how far in you are, and to its last day to find what's left — the same day-counting logic as Days Between Dates, just bounded to a three-month window instead of two arbitrary dates.

Calendar quarters vs. fiscal quarters

This calculator uses calendar-year quarters, which line up with the plain January–December calendar. That's not universal: the US federal government's fiscal year runs October through September, so its "Q1" is October–December, and plenty of companies run fiscal years starting in April or July for their own accounting reasons. If a deadline references a "fiscal quarter," check which fiscal calendar it means before assuming it matches the calendar quarter shown here.

Frequently asked questions

What are the calendar quarter dates?

Q1 is January 1 to March 31, Q2 is April 1 to June 30, Q3 is July 1 to September 30, and Q4 is October 1 to December 31. This calculator uses these standard calendar-year quarters.

Is this the same as my company's fiscal quarter?

Not necessarily. This tool uses calendar-year quarters (Jan–Dec). Many organizations run a different fiscal year instead — the US federal government's fiscal year starts October 1, and plenty of companies use July or April start dates — so their Q1 won't match this calculator's Q1.

How many days are in a quarter?

It varies: Q1 is 90 days (91 in a leap year), Q2 is 91 days, and Q3 and Q4 are each 92 days.
