About this date

Tax Day is the deadline for filing US federal individual income tax returns, set by law as April 15. It shifts to the next business day when the 15th falls on a Saturday or Sunday, and there's one more wrinkle: because Emancipation Day (a Washington, DC legal holiday on April 16) is observed on April 15 whenever the 16th falls on a Saturday, a Friday April 15 always pushes the deadline to the following Monday too — that's why Tax Day landed on April 18 in 2011, 2016 and 2022. This page always counts down to the next correctly-shifted deadline, computed the same way each year rather than assumed fixed on April 15.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tax Day always April 15?

Most years, yes — but it shifts to the next business day when April 15 falls on a Saturday or Sunday, and also shifts from a Friday April 15 to the following Monday because of the Emancipation Day holiday rule (see below). Recent examples: 2011, 2016 and 2022 all moved to April 18.

Why does Emancipation Day affect the federal tax deadline?

Emancipation Day (April 16) is a legal holiday in Washington, DC, and by law an IRS filing deadline that falls on a DC legal holiday moves to the next non-holiday, non-weekend day. When April 16 is a Saturday, DC observes the holiday the day before instead — April 15 — pushing that year's Tax Day to the following Monday.

Does this apply to state tax deadlines too?

Not necessarily — this page tracks the federal IRS deadline specifically. Most states align their own income tax deadline to it, but a few set their own date, so confirm your state's deadline separately if it matters to you.

What if I need more time to file?

Filing IRS Form 4868 grants an automatic six-month extension to file (typically to mid-October), though it doesn't extend the deadline to pay any tax owed — that's still due on the original Tax Day to avoid interest and penalties.
