Why 1900 Wasn't a Leap Year (But 2000 Was): The Real Leap Year Rule

"Every 4 years" is the rule everyone learns, and it's the rule that's wrong about three years out of every four centuries. The real rule has a second clause almost nobody remembers — until it changes their calendar.

If you only know one leap year rule, it's probably "divisible by 4." That gets you the right answer almost all the time — 2024, 2028, 2032 are all leap years, exactly as expected. But it fails on certain century years, and it's failed on one within living memory: 1900 was divisible by 4, and it was not a leap year. Meanwhile 2000, also a century year, was. The difference between them is a second rule most people never learn, because it only matters once every 100 years. The actual rule, in three parts

The Gregorian calendar — the one almost the entire world uses today — defines a leap year with three conditions, applied in order:

  1. If the year is divisible by 4, it's a leap year...
  2. ...unless the year is also divisible by 100, in which case it's not a leap year...
  3. ...unless the year is also divisible by 400, in which case it is a leap year after all.

Run 1900 through that: divisible by 4, yes. Divisible by 100, yes. Divisible by 400? 1900 ÷ 400 = 4.75 — no. So the century exception applies, and 1900 was a common year, 365 days, no February 29. Now run 2000: divisible by 4, yes. Divisible by 100, yes. Divisible by 400? 2000 ÷ 400 = 5 exactly — yes. The exception to the exception kicks back in, and 2000 was a leap year.

Century years are the only ones where the three-part rule can disagree with the simple "divisible by 4" shortcut, so they're the only ones worth listing individually:

So the next time the "divisible by 4" shortcut will quietly give you the wrong answer is 2100 — anyone doing quick date math that year needs to remember February tops out at 28 days, not 29, despite 2100 being divisible by 4. Every other year on this list follows the same logic: 1600 (before this table starts) was also a leap year, for the same reason as 2000 and 2400 — all three are divisible by 400.

Why the century exception exists at all

It comes down to Earth's orbit not lining up neatly with 365.25 days. A full trip around the sun takes about 365.2422 days — close to 365 and a quarter, but a little short of it. A calendar that adds a leap day every 4 years without exception, which is exactly what the older Julian calendar did, overcorrects: it averages 365.25 days a year, about 11 minutes too many. Eleven minutes a year sounds trivial, but it compounds. Left uncorrected, it adds up to roughly 3 extra days every 400 years — which is precisely why the Gregorian calendar removes 3 leap years from every 400-year span. A plain 4-year rule gives 100 leap years per 400 years (400 ÷ 4); knocking out the 3 century years that aren't divisible by 400 leaves 97. That works out to an average year of 365 + 97⁄400 = 365.2425 days — within about a quarter of a day of the real 365.2422, or roughly one day of drift every 3,300 years, instead of one day every 128 years under the old Julian rule.

The Julian calendar's drift is also why the Gregorian calendar exists in the first place: by 1582, when Pope Gregory XIII introduced the reform, the accumulated error had pushed the calendar about 10 days out of sync with the seasons. The switch was made by skipping 10 days outright — in the countries that adopted it immediately, Thursday, October 4, 1582 was followed directly by Friday, October 15, 1582. Not every country switched at the same time; England and its colonies didn't adopt the Gregorian calendar until 1752, by which point they had to drop 11 days instead of 10.

For almost everyone, the practical impact of all this is exactly one day: whether February has 28 or 29 days this year.
