How ISO Week Numbers Actually Work (And Why January 1 Isn't Always Week 1)

If you've ever seen a date stamped "2026-W34" or heard someone at work say "let's push it to week 12," that's ISO week numbering — and it follows a stricter, less intuitive rule than most people assume.

ISO 8601, the same international standard that gives us the YYYY-MM-DD date format, also defines a standard way to number the weeks of a year. It shows up more than you'd think: payroll systems track "pay week 12," agile teams schedule sprints by week number, European manufacturers stamp week codes on packaging for shelf-life tracking, and plenty of planners and calendar apps print a small week number in the corner of every page. The rule: Monday-start weeks, and week 1 contains January 4

Two things define an ISO week:

First, every ISO week runs Monday through Sunday — never Sunday-start, which is the default in a lot of US calendars and software.

Second, week 1 of any year is defined as the week that contains that year's January 4th. An equivalent way to say the same rule: week 1 is the week containing the year's first Thursday. Both versions describe the identical week, and the second one explains why Thursday specifically matters — a Monday-to-Sunday week that contains January 4th is guaranteed to have at least four of its seven days in the new year, so it makes sense to call that the new year's first week rather than the old year's last one.

As one example: today, August 23, 2026, falls in ISO week 2026-W34.

Why January 1 isn't always in week 1

This is the part that trips people up. Because week 1 is anchored to January 4th rather than January 1st, the first few days of January can actually belong to the previous year's final week — and conversely, the last few days of December can already belong to the next year's week 1.

The exact rule: January 1st lands in week 1 only if it falls on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. If it falls on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, it's actually part of the last week (52 or 53) of the previous ISO year. The mirror version applies at the other end of December: December 31st belongs to the following year's week 1 only if it falls on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.

Two concrete, verifiable examples:

Monday, December 29, 2025 already falls in ISO week 2026-W01 — three days before the new year even starts, because it's the Monday that opens the week containing January 4, 2026.

Friday, January 1, 2027 falls in ISO week 2026-W53 — the first day of the new calendar year is still counted as part of the previous ISO year's final week, because a Friday January 1st can't be part of a week that contains January 4th.

Why some years have 53 weeks instead of 52

A year normally has 52 ISO weeks, but some have 53. The exact condition: a common (non-leap) year has 53 weeks if its January 1st falls on a Thursday; a leap year has 53 weeks if its January 1st falls on a Wednesday or a Thursday. Checked against every year from 1901 to 2100, that works out to 36 years with 53 weeks out of 200 — almost exactly 5 years in every 28 (about 18%).

2026 happens to be one of them: January 1, 2026 fell on a Thursday, so this year runs all the way through 2026-W53, which covers December 28–31. The next 53-week years after that are 2032 and 2037.

A common mistake: don't just divide the day of the year by 7

The obvious shortcut — take the day-of-year number and divide by 7, rounding up — gets the week number wrong for a meaningful chunk of every year. It doesn't account for which weekday January 1st actually falls on, so it can't correctly decide whether early January belongs to week 1 or the previous year's last week, and it has no way to produce a 53rd week when one is genuinely needed.
